London Mayor Boris Johnson and Hugh Robertson, minister for Sport and the Olympics, will also be present at the Panathenaic Stadium. The flame will then be flown to Culdrose naval base in Cornwall on the south-west tip of England before triple Olympic gold medal winning sailor Ben Ainslie starts the relay in Britain from Land's End on Saturday.

Beckham, now 37, will be joined in Athens by five young Britons invited by organisers LOCOG and the British Council in recognition of their commitment to sport and promoting Olympic values.

They will also play a role in the handover ceremony. "We wanted to involve young people from across the UK in bringing home the Olympic Flame," said Coe in a statement.

Illegal quarrying by private individuals has been going on relentlessly right under the nose of the district administration and forest department, but yet the authorities have not taken any step to stop the exploitation and looting of the natural resource.

Situated just few yards from Mathavara Forest Information Centre, illegal quarrying has been going on at Dammadahalli, on forest land since several years.

However, the authorities who should have taken action against the individuals engaged in quarrying have turned a blind eye.

With the unabated quarrying, the local residents are living under constant fear of losing the roof over their heads. The proofs are the cracks on the walls of most of the houses in the region, caused due to the use of explosives for quarrying.

Though the villagers know that two influential persons from the village have been quarrying in the region without any permission from district administration, forest department, mines and geology and environment department, they have not been able to help themselves.

Three cattle died when the cowshed caught fire, on Wednesday morning. The cattle belonged to Mahanthesh, resident of Siddrameshwara road in Ajjampura.

The fire was seen at 1.40 am on Wednesday, which burnt down three cattle, including one calf. The agriculture equipment like the plough etc too have been destroyed.

Though the local residents tried to douse off the fire, they could not rescue the cattle. Loss has been estimated at Rs 85,000.
